The outline
Hoping to shake off her obsession with the man living in her mother’s house, a young woman signs up for therapy. It backfires. She learns that her therapist, her mother and her two sisters are already molding his desires, almost as though they had scripted them ahead of time. Beyond that the synopsis stays silent, and since it gives no character names, even the man at the heart of it is an enigma.
Odder than its title suggests
From the title you would expect yet another stepsister story, and Candy has plenty, with 19 series tagged Sister. What you get is stranger and more ambitious. The therapist is a participant rather than a helper, and the family appears to be following a script, which lends the series a touch of psychological thriller. Instead of keeping a secret, the heroine becomes the one nobody tells.
The same ambition is where it could go wrong. Squeezing a heroine, her two sisters, her mother and a therapist into five episodes is a tall order, and the synopsis never makes clear whether the “script” is an actual conspiracy or just a figure of speech. If you want a plain forbidden-attraction story, the cast may feel too crowded.
Free episodes first, then the price
Episodes 1 and 2 cost nothing, and they should tell you whether the therapy angle holds up. Verdict
On paper, Step-Sister’s Secret beats most of Candy’s Sister titles for interest: the therapy setup and a scheme involving the whole family point to genuine twists. Whether five episodes can pay that off remains to be seen, and the two free episodes are the low-cost way to find out.
